Mr. Cottrill is currently in his twenty-first year as a public school teacher. He has worked in Rushville (93-95), Columbus (95-01), and Seymour (01-present) at many different schools. He is the director of bands for Seymour Community Schools where he teaches classes in marching band, concert band, symphonic band, campus owls jazz ensemble, music appreciation and music theory. He also leads extra-curricular groups in pep band and pit orchestra. Under Mr. Cottrill’s leadership, the SHS band enrollment continues to grow and thrive. The athletic bands have a great reputation and following in southern Indiana. The concert, symphonic, and jazz bands present several concerts each year that are musically diverse and excellent in quality. The bands are always well received when they perform.
Mr. Cottrill is a proud and loyal Indiana University Jacobs School of Music graduate. He has been on the board of directors for the Marching Hundred Alumni band and the Jacobs School of Music Alumni council. He was the president of the alumni band from 05-07 and he was presented the Newell Long Award for alumni excellence in 2008. He continues to support IU Band Day each year by showcasing the marching owls each fall. He has not missed a marching hundred alumni band or alumni pep band in 21 years!
Mr. Cottrill has been happily married to Laura Cottrill for eighteen years. She is also gainfully employed at Seymour Community Schools as an English teacher at SHS. The Cottrill’s have three children Harrison, William, and Katie. In his free time, Mr. Cottrill loves to spend time with his family and travel. He also has a passion for golf and tries to play when his schedule allows.
Miss Mirer has been teaching band in Seymour since 1986. She graduated from Ball State with a B.S in Music Education in 1983 and received a Masters Degree in Music Education in 1990. She also holds a Masters in Counseling from Indiana University.
In addition to her teaching duties, Miss Mirer plays clarinet in the Columbus City Band and the Schulhaus 4 + 3 German Band. Miss Mirer is also president of the Humane Society of Jackson County and is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma an organization for women educators.
Miss Mirer lives in the Cortland area with her 6 dogs and 7 cats. She trains her dogs in agility and competes in many competitions with them. Miss Mirer enjoys her teaching job at SMS and is thankful for all of the wonderful students she has had through the years in Seymour.
Debbie Carroll joined the Seymour Band team in the f all 2013. She is currently working at SHS, SMS, and 6th Grade Center. She is a graduate of Jennings County High School and Ball State University. She has taught band in Jennings, Jackson, and Bartholomew counties and, most recently, taught band at St. Bartholomew School in Columbus for 10 years. Debbie lives in Columbus with her husband, John, and is the proud mom of 2 children, Eileen and John. In her spare time she can be found either working in her yard or piecing together a quilt in her sewing room.
